The Burrow and Reflections on Sunnyslope
The citizens of Phoenix Arizona came together to create Sombra, a public art exhibition that creatively deal with the rising heat index in that city. With support from Bloomberg Philanthropies, nine artists were selected to present temporary public art.
The ¡Sombra! artists are experimenting with innovative materials and processes, creative themes, and community engagement activities resulting in temporary art installations which were unveiled throughout the City of Phoenix in the Spring of 2025.
The City’s public art program has a long history of commissioning artist-designed shade structures and has committed funding for shade, cooling, and heat mitigation projects in its Public Art Plan. Depending on the success of ¡Sombra! Experiments in Shade, some artists may be commissioned to turn their projects into permanent installations. Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture will work closely with our partners to determine which projects, if any, are suitable candidates for permanent installation.
In Phoenix, high temperatures often exceed 100°F, significantly raising the heat index. During summer months, the heat index can reach dangerous levels, prompting heat advisories. These projects offer protection for the citizens of Phoenix both helping and educating the local population to the effects of climate change but also the social history of the area.
