Why a Fabrication Studio and Who Will Use It?
In order to elevate the arts, local and regional and the trades within Harlem’s community, there has to be a space to cultivate these skills.
Currently, there are not any spaces that provides this.
The West Harlem Arts Fund wants to provide a facility that supports local artists by providing a space to fabricate their own artwork and develop their craft, a space where residents can learn
the art of creating with metal, wood, and digital fabrication. This artwork would be shared with the well-deserving neighborhood, and providing sources of beauty for everyone.
Why a Fabrication Studio and Who Will Use It?
In order to facilitate greater pride with their neighborhood, there will also be training to support resiliency efforts. Land management goes hand in hand with outdoor public art. Therefore classes in tree maintenance and pruning and landscaping will be held. We will also teach classes in the need for proper drainage, how to use bioswales, which plantings should be used in different areas, and are the most resilient or maintenance friendly.
Our fabrication studio will also host trade workshops where people can learn how to perform such skills as electrical wiring, wood and steel framing to understand how buildings are put together, welding to understand out to build supports for furniture, and tile laying to learn how to renovate their apartments.
Developing these skills for adults and community youth life skills that will help them maintain their own homes, and foster potential for new careers.
