The venue of our next installation is Bartow Pell-Mansion Museum, located in the Northeast Bronx. The West Harlem Art Fund is very excited about this installation. The organization has produced numerous installations in NYC parks but never in a formal garden. The artist chosen for this installation is Dianne Smith and the name of the exhibition is ‘Organic Abstracts’.
Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum is apart of the Historic House Trust of NYC. The mansion, located in the North Bronx, predates the American Revolution. Situated in the City’s largest park, the site was also selected because it is near a wildlife sanctuary and Orchard Beach.
The Bronx is not often thought of as a pastoral place, once full of country estates such as the Bartow-Pelll Mansion. Yet, there is still much natural beauty there. We want to expand how New Yorkers and other visitors think about this borough. The Bronx is home to many ethnic groups to whom nature is very important. This installation hopes to connect these varied emotions and histories with nature in a manner not seen before on the site. This is why it is an ideal place to display public art.
